Silver contact print, the image measuring 4 3 / 4 x6 1 / 2 inches (12.1x16.5 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with notations, including “Springvale, Me,” in pencil, in an unknown hand, on verso. 1909 [1,200/1,800] Hine’s photo-reportage for the National Child Labor Committee took him to Maine in 1909. The youthful figures in the foreground gaze at the photographer with a focused intensity that ref lects Hine’s role as an investigator and outsider. 54
