With a total of 12 photographs, 6 in each issue. Albumen prints, 11 of the prints measuring 5 3 / 8 x8 inches (13.6x20.3 cm.), and the reverse, the portrait of Sir Thomas Francis Wade 4x2 3 / 4 inches (10.2x7 cm.), mounted recto only to the publication’s pages, each with a printed caption on mount recto. Tall 4tos, marbled boards, with the original issues bound in; the second partially disbound, one leaf is detached; both are ex-library, with Essex Institute blind stamps in the margins and an Essex Institute, Special Library China label and “withdrawn” hand stamps on the front pastedowns. Shanghai, 1876 [1,200/1,800] 13 c   (JAPAN—TAMAMURA) A beautiful album with 50 scenic photographs. Including delicately rendered scenes of temples, landscapes, street scenes, geisha, and occupationals (including rice planting, women wading in a river, and a group of children); possibly attributed to the Kozaburo Tamamura studio, which operated in Tokyo and Yokohama. Hand-colored albumen prints, the images measuring approximately 8x10 inches (20.3x25.4 cm.), and the reverse, mounted recto/verso to mounts with hand-applied decorative elements, many with captions in the negative, and some with other captions, in pencil, below the image; with the original tissue guards. Oblong folio, red lacquer covers with gilt highlights and delicate pictorial elements; leather backstrip; all edges gilt; enclosed in the original cloth box with the printed Kozaburo Tamamura attribution. 1880s-90s [2,500/3,500] 13 12
