33 c LÖIS MAILOU JONES (1905 - 1998) Paris le Soir . Oil on linen canvas, circa 1948-50. 711x559 mm; 28x22 inches. Signed in oil, lower right. Provenance: estate of the artist; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, New York. With the artist’s hand-written label, inscribed with her 1220 Quincy Street, NE, Washington, DC address, pinned to the stretcher bars. Also Céline Marie Tabary’s name and the same Quincy Street address are inscribed in ink on the stretcher bars, verso. Loïs Mailou Jones and Céline Marie Tabary (1908 – 1993) became friends in Paris when they studied at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1937. Tabary followed Jones, emigrating toWashington, DC in 1938 and stayed due to the beginning of World War II. In the late 1940s, Tabary and Jones founded the “Little Paris Group”, a studio group for live model sessions artists that they held on the top f loor of Jones’ Quincy Street residence. This joyous homage to Paris dates from this late 1940s period. [12,000/18,000]
