Linoleum cut printed in green and black on imitation Japan paper, circa 1952. 452x425 mm; 17 5 / 8 x16 1 / 2 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Artist’s proof, printed circa 1957. Signed and titled pencil, lower margin. Elizabeth Catlett’s iconic image Sharecropper was first printed in 1952 - that year it won her second prize in graphics at the Atlanta University Annual Exhibition with the title Negro Woman . This early proof is a scarce impression of the linoleum cut in color bearing the title Cosechadora de Algodón . Catlett used this title when her print was illustrated in the journal Artes de México in 1957. There are various subsequent proof impressions printed in black, as well as an edition of 60 in color in 1970. Herzog pp. 104-105. [15,000/25,000]
