This vivid study of nature is an excellent example of Hale Woodruff ’s modern landscapes. Woodruff painted a number of oil and watercolor landscapes of the eroded, wooded rural hills around Atlanta in the 1930s and 40s. Another desolate scene is Southland , circa 1936, located in the collection of the Amistad Research Center, New Orleans. One of Woodruff ’s best known images, Poor Man’s Cotton , watercolor, 1944, collection of the Newark Museum, has similar vivid washes of aquamarine blue. [15,000/25,000]
