Closure I is an early and striking example from a series of three dimensional works in which Sam Gilliam poured and layered acrylic on birch plywood. Gilliam began showing these constructions in 1997 at Klein Art Works in Chicago, and in his Solo Exhibition: Gilliam in 3-D at the Kreeger Museum, Washington, DC the following year.
