Provenance: acquired at Kaminski auctions, Beverly, MA; private collection, New York (2013). This large plaster head is an early portrait by Richmond Barthé. In 1928, he made similar life- size heads in a series of portraits, including Henry Ossawa Tanner , Touissant L’Ouverture , Booker T. Washington and Paul Lawrence Dunbar , all in painted plaster.
