Sale 2486, Part I - The Harold Holzer Collection of Lincolniana, September 27, 2018
PERHAPSTHE LAST PRINT OF LINCOLN PUBLISHED DURING HIS LIFETIME 124 c (PRINTS—SECOND TERM.) Grand Reception of the Notabilities of the Nation at the White House 1865. Lithograph, 19 x 23 3 / 4 inches; spot-mounted to modern board, mat toning, moderate foxing, minor edge wear. New York: Frank Leslie, 1865 [1,200/1,800] This print was created as a premium for a new family magazine, Frank Leslie’s Chimney Corner, and copyrighted on 8 April 1865. It imagines Lincoln greeting notable Americans at a grand White House reception. Flanked by Mrs. Lincoln and Vice President Johnson, Lincoln presides over a crowd of hundreds including cabinet members, General Grant and Sherman (who were still quite occupied with the war at this point), and many more. The print was given to any purchaser of the magazine’s first two issues, but the key was not included until the 4th issue to encourage subscribers. By that point, Lincoln was gone, and a pirated version of this print had appeared as “Lincoln’s Last Reception.” Lincoln Image, pages 144-146. 124 123 c (PRINTS—EMANCIPATION.) Herline, Edward. President Lincoln and his Cabinet, Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. Lithograph, 30 x 24; wear at edges, moderate toning. Philadelphia: D. Hensel & Co., Goff & Brother, 1866 [500/750] This composition was loosely adapted from Francis B. Carpenter’s classic 1864 painting popularized by Alexander Hay Ritchie’s engraving (see above). Several of the cabinet members have been moved, and Carpenter’s original rendering of Lincoln has been replaced with a Brady portrait. It is much scarcer than the Ritchie engraving; we trace none others at auction since Swann’s 23 May 1985 Lincoln sale, lot 157, which was in poor condition. Lincoln Image, pages 123-5. with —a toned and slightly cropped example of the original Carpenter-Ritchie lithograph,“The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the Cabinet.” 24 x 36 inches. [NewYork, 1866]
