Sale 2486, Part I - The Harold Holzer Collection of Lincolniana, September 27, 2018

116 c   (PRINTS—CARTOONS.) Politicians Measuring Lincoln’s Shoes. Hand-colored woodcut engraving, 9 3 / 4 x 14 inches; wear at edges extending slightly into image, minor dampstaining. New York: H.H. Lloyd & Co., [5 March 1864] [600/900] This print was apparently offered as a premium with the 5 March 1864 issue of the New York Illustrated News. It depicts a variety of New York newspaper editors and Lincoln supporters such as Charles Sumner, Horace Greeley, and Henry Raymond of the New York Times as tiny gnomes measuring Lincoln’s shoes to see if they can be filled, while the president slumbers in the background. See Holzer, “Lincoln and New York.” None traced at auction or in OCLC, though the New-York Historical Society holds another example. 115 116
