Sale 2486, Part I - The Harold Holzer Collection of Lincolniana, September 27, 2018

101 c   (PRINTS—PRESIDENTIAL.) Maps of the Atlantic States: Forts Sumter, Pickens, Monroe and McHenry. Hand-colored engraving, 26 1 / 2 x 20 1 / 2 inches to sight; laid down on early board in mat, toning, minor dampstaining, wear to mat, split in upper left corner with closed tear through Jackson’s head. [Boston]: L. Prang & Co., 1861 [800/1,200] Produced very early in the war, this print includes portraits of Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Winfield Scott, and Major Anderson (“The Hero of Sumter”), as well as a view of Harper’s Ferry, inset maps of Washington, Baltimore and the principal forts, and more. We can find no other examples of this print in institutions or at auction. We have traced 3 examples of a very similar Prang print headed “Maps of the Eastern, Middle and Southern States” which omits the Winfield Scott and Harper’s Ferry images; a copy of that version did sell at auction in 1906.
