Sale 2486, Part I - The Harold Holzer Collection of Lincolniana, September 27, 2018

99 c   (PRINTS—PRESIDENTIAL.) Berg & Porsch; [after Gardner.] Untitled German portrait of Lincoln. Chromolithograph, 17 3 / 4 x 13 3 / 4 inches to sight; linen-backed, framed without glass, a bit of light cracking in image area. Berlin, [1861?] [1,500/2,500] An early European depiction of Lincoln. Alexander Gardner’s 24 February 1861 photograph (Ostendorf O-51) was the source image, a favorite of German and French printmakers. The resulting print, though, looks unmistakably and eerily European. We trace no other copies at auction. Boritt, Neely & Holzer, “The European Image of Abraham Lincoln,” in Winterthur Portfolio 21:2/3 (Summer 1986), page 171.
