Sale 2486, Part I - The Harold Holzer Collection of Lincolniana, September 27, 2018
28 c (EPHEMERA.) Harley, Joseph S. Jeffie Davis, the Belle of Richmond. 5 printed pages on one sheet, 5 3 / 4 x 13 1 / 2 inches; some separations at folds; inked library stamps on verso. New York, 1865 [800/1,200] On 10 May 1865, Jefferson Davis was captured while allegedly wearing his wife’s cloak, a development which brought joy to the hearts of Union cartoonists. This five-panel pamphlet depicts a nervous-looking Davis being fitted for a skirt, running desperately from the troops, and finally standing at the gallows. 28 29 29 c (EPHEMERA.) Republican “Union Ticket” election ballot for California. Double-sided engraved ballot, 7 1 / 4 x 3 inches, with illustrated text on recto printed in red, and an engraving in blue and black on verso; moderate foxing and minor wear, 3 horizontal folds. Np, [November 1864] [500/750] The ballot lists not only Lincoln and Johnson at the top of the ticket, but also the 5 Republican electors for California and Donald C. McRuer of San Francisco for Congress. On verso is an illustration of the June 1864 naval duel off Cherbourg, France between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama. Sherman’s capture of Atlanta was more commonly used as a Union rallying cry during the 1864 campaign, but might not have resonated as much in distant California as the sinking of a Confederate commerce raider. 30 c (EPHEMERA.) Ticket to the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. 3 x 4 3 / 4 inches (including attached stub), printed in red on yellow card stock; uninscribed, minimal wear. Washington, DC, 3 April 1868 [400/600]
