Partly-printed Document Signed “U.S. Grant” as President, 6 x 7 1 / 4 inches to sight; horizontal folds, one passing through signature, signature very slightly smudged; framed and matted with a small colored engraving of Grant (dampstained). Albany, NY, 10 January 1840 [200/300] Lincoln’s future Secretary of State acknowledges a recommendation for a patronage position as revenue collector in Dutchess County, NY, and also comments on the recent Whig national convention which nominated the Harrison-Tyler ticket for the presidency: “I concur fully in the sentiments you express concerning the result of the deliberations at Harrisburg.” with —a Civil War-era carte-de-visite portrait of Seward on a plain mount.
