Oversized silver print, the image measuring 16 1 / 4 x23 1 / 4 inches (41.3x59.7 cm.), the sheet 20x23 3 / 4 inches (50.8x59.7 cm.), with an Art Kane Estate hand stamp with a family member’s signature, in ink, on verso. 1958; printed 1997 [4,000/6,000] Kane assembled “57 of the coolest cats [and kittens] in jazz,” among them Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Gene Krupa, Mary LouWilliams, Roy Eldridge, Milt Hinton, and Lester Young, at 17 East 126th Street. The idea for the picture was Kane’s, who was then a young art director at Esquire magazine.
