Upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Charles Searles received the Ware Memorial Traveling Scholarship and was the first student to use the funds to travel to Africa. Drawing inspiration from colors, patterns, masks, forms and dance movements from such countries as Nigeria, Ghana, and Morocco, Searles’ work began to take a great shift in its subject matter. Once he returned home to Philadelphia, he started teaching at the Ile Ife Cultural Center and began his Dancer series. [5,000/7,000]
