72 c JACOB LAWRENCE (1917 - 2000) The Pentecost . Color lithograph, 1965. 340x457 mm; 13 3 / 8 x18 inches, full margins. Edition size unknown. Printed by United Church Press, Boston/Philadelphia. Published by United Homeland Ministries, Boston. From Christian Concepts in Art: Seven Original Lithographs . A group of artists including Jacob Lawrence were commissioned to create a series of lithographs illustrating “seven concepts universal to the Christian faith.” Peter Nesbett states “No numbered or hand-signed copies are known to exist, as of March 2001.” Lawrence arrived late to printmaking - he began making prints mid-career, despite his early exposure to printmaking at the Harlem Art Center during the WPA. This extremely scarce, early lithograph is just the artist’s second print - made two years after his first, and before he made a commitment to printmaking in the 1970s. Nesbett L65-1. [2,000/3,000]
