One page, 11 x 8 1 / 2 inches; mailing folds, minimal wear. With original stamped and cancelled mailing envelope in Lawrence’s hand, additionally signed in the return address. [Seattle, WA], 6 December 1977 [400/600] Lawrence wrote this letter at the age of 60, while serving as a professor at the University of Washington. In full: “Thank you for your ‘con- gradulations’ on my appointment to the National Council on the Arts. Your card is greatly appre- ciated. I do hope to make some contribution to the Council—both for the community in general and the art community in particular. Gwen and I both continue to remember of that wonderful visit to your home during our last visit east. It too was greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you again in the not too distant future. In the mean- time, keep well. Enjoy the holidays and love to both of you and Patty.” 85 86 THE NEWARK RIOTS 86 c (ART.) Mixed-media collage 18 x 12, affixed to a sheet, 24 x 18 inches, covered with inscrip- tions of people from the Newark area, in appreciation for Curwin’s work on behalf of the community. [Newark, circa 1970s] [1,000/1,500] A unique piece of art presented to Robert Curwin (1934-2015), a journalist and co-founder of Newark’s chapter of CORE, who played a role in tamping down the anger surrounding the 1967 Newark riots. The piece is built upon a page of obituaries from a 1969 Newark newspaper over- laid with a peace symbol, flag, gun, dove, and other motifs.
