Ross was very active in the Underground Railroad, not only from the Canadian side, but in New Orleans,Alabama, and Kentucky; he was imprisoned for his efforts.Ten pages of testimonials at the front of the volume include endorsements by Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Greenleaf Whittier,William Lloyd Garrison, Gerrit Smith and many others. Illustrations include an engraved frontispiece of a slave in a jail cell, a portrait of the author, and text illustrations of John Brown, his pike and rifle, an emancipated slave, and several facsimile signatures.
