Np, 14 August 1953 [300/400] Toni Stone (1921-1996) was the first of three women to play baseball professionally alongside men in the Negro Leagues. She played for several teams between 1949 and 1954. Chicago, 27 July 1951 [500/750] Betty Irene Chapman (1930-2001) became the first African-American in professional women’s ball in 1951 when she joined the Admiral Music Maids of the National Girls Baseball League.The league was a Chicago-based rival to the more well- known All American Girls Professional Baseball League. Chapman was a student at the Illinois State Normal College at the time. She remained with the team at least through September.
