Stephen, Robert. Runaway slave broadside: “Ranaway from the subscriber . . . a negro man named Daniel.” Letterpress broadside, 9 1 / 2 x 11 inches; folds, quite worn and toned at left and right edges without loss of text, could be trimmed or matted to good effect. Lewisburg, VA: J.F. Caldwell, 20 October 1829 [2,500/3,500] Offers an unusually vivid description of the escaped Daniel: “a large, stout fellow, full six feet high, upwards of 35 years old, of a yellow complexion, and thick lips. When he looks you straight in the face, you can dis- cover a whiteness in his eyes. . . . He has a remarkably soft & effeminate voice.” Daniel had previously been sent to work in the Kanawha Salines salt mines near Charleston, WV; Stephen surmised that “it is quite probable that he is lurking in that neighborhood, or on his way to Ohio.” The notice was posted from Ste- phen’s Ferry in Greenbrier County (now West Virginia). No copies of this broadside are traced in OCLC.
