Albumen photograph, 5 x 8 inches, on original plain mount; considerable foxing and fading to the image, faint surface cracking, mount apparently cropped; very faint pencil inscription on verso,“Geo. Hearst.” Np, circa 1890? [600/900] This photograph depicts 23 African-American miners and a pair of slightly better-dressed white men in the back, presumably foremen.They are posed with a variety of mining implements in front of the shed housing the mine’s hoist.A few of the miners appear to be quite young.The name of mining magnate George Hearst (1820-1891) appears on verso. Hearst owned an interest in several mines, most notably the Ontario Silver mine near Park City, UT.The photograph was found at an estate in Idaho. 320 c   (PHOTOGRAPHY.)
