Np, images circa 1970 [600/900] Chester Sheard (1930-2015) was an African-American photographer who spent much of his life inWisconsin, but was best known for his work in Chi- cago’s civil rights and music scene from the 1960s to the 1980s.This image of guitarist B.B. King was used on the cover of the 1971 album “Live in Cook County Jail,” where it became one of the most recognizable images in blues. Chester Burnett, better known as Howlin’Wolf, is shown playing harmonica not long before his 1976 death. Purchased by the consignor from the photographer in the late 1980s. 312 c   (MUSIC.) Group of flyers by Buddy Esquire, “King of the Hip Hop Flyer” and others. 18 printed handbills, various sizes from 8 1 / 2 x 5 inches to 11 x 8 1 / 2 inches, on various paper stocks, some commercially printed and some photocopies, 12 of them signed in type by Buddy Esquire, 3 signed in type by his brother Eddie Ed; minimal wear, tape remnants on one flyer. Vp, 1980-83 [2,000/3,000] Lemoin Thompson III (1958-2014), best known as Buddy Esquire, was a leading producer of hip-hop party fliers during the early era from 1978 to 1981. His design sensibility became a major part of the scene. A catalogue of his work will be published later this year: “Buddy Esquire: King of the Hip Hop Flyer.” Offered here are 10 original Buddy Esquire show flyers from 1980 and 1981, plus another from 1983, and an undated flyer promoting his work: “I paint T-shirts, jackets, jeans. Call for prices.” They include performances by Spoonie Gee, the Treacherous Three, the Cold Crush Brothers, and many more. The Funky 4 +1 (the first to feature a female MC and the first to appear live on network television) are featured on 6 of the flyers. Most of the venues are in the Bronx, with a few in nearby White Plains, New Jersey, and Harlem. Also included are three flyers by Buddy Esquire’s brother Eddie Ed, and 3 other unsigned flyers.
