303 c   (MUSIC.) Billie Holiday, First Lady of Song on NewYork’s Famed 52nd Street. Photograph, 10 x 8 inches; minor wear in image. NewYork, circa 1948; printed circa 1980s [400/600] A photographically reproduced cartoon produced by Holiday’s booking agent, apparently as part of her press kit. Done in the style of “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not,” it offers a short biography of the singer, lauds her recent performances at New York’s Town Hall and Philadelphia’s Academy of Music, and is illustrated with a finely drawn portrait and two car- icatures by artist George Lee. “Booked exclusively by Associated Booking Corp., Joe Glaser, Pres.” 304 c   (MUSIC.) Our Second Annual Colored Boat Ride. Poster, 22 x 14 inches, printed in blue on light coated board; light toning, slight chipping at corners. Clarksville,TN, 29 April [1953] [400/600] The excursion steamer Avalon offered dinner and dancing cruises in a variety of locales—all apparently strictly segregated. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle of 29 April 1952 discusses what was apparently the first white cruise of this boat ride, with the same musical entertainment: the Memphis Rhythm Masters Orchestra. This “sec- ond annual” appearance fits for 1953, as April 29 fell on aWednesday that year. 303 304
