17 c   (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Signed carte-de-visite portrait of escaped slave and accused murderer John Anderson. Albumen photograph, 3 1 / 2 x 2 inches, on original plain mount, with signature in lower margin; minor toning, minimal wear. Np, circa 1863 [500/750] While escaping from slavery in 1853, John Ander- son encountered a Missouri farmer who attempted to apprehend him. Anderson stabbed the farmer and continued north, making a life for himself in Canada. In April 1860, he was arrested on the earlier murder charges, which began a long struggle to extradite him to the United States for trial. He was ultimately released on a technical- ity. “The Story of the Life of John Anderson, the Fugitive Slave” was published in 1863, with an engraving of Anderson and a very tidy facsimile signature. The present seated photograph is previ- ously unknown, but appears to be from the same sitting as one used for his 1863 engraved portrait. The signature here is less polished than the published signature, but closely resembles another sold by Swann in 2013. 18 c   (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Thuss; photog rapher. Cabinet card por trait of Alfred Jackson, former slave to Andrew Jackson. 5 3 / 4 x 4 inches, on original mount with photographer’s gilt stamp on mount recto, inked date stamp and manuscript notes on on verso; tack holes in upper margin, minor wear. Nashville, TN, circa 1890 [1,200/1,800] Alfred Jackson (1805-1901) was the personal servant of President Andrew Jackson at the Hermitage in Tennessee. Born into slavery, he was at the president’s deathbed in 1845, remained with his wife as the family’s only servants during the Civil War, and in freedom remained as a tour guide at the Hermitage until his death, having spent virtually his entire life there. The caption on verso reads “The old body servant of Gen. Jackson.” Other images of Alfred Jackson and a note on his life can be found in Hoobler, “Images of America: Nashville, Volume II,” page 65. Provenance: from an auction of the Nashville pho- tographic collection of Carl and Otto Giers, 2016. 17 18
