276 276 c   (MILITARY—WORLD WAR ONE.) Salesman’s sample photo case. Two hand-colored photographs, each about 13 x 8 inches to sight, each under curved glass and felt- lined mats, mounted in a sturdy hinged briefcase with latches and a handle, 11 x 16 x 2 1 / 2 inches; moderate wear and oxidation to the exterior, the interior including photographs well-preserved. Np, circa 1918 [800/1,200] The photographs depict an African-American seaman at left, and soldier at right—the soldier wearing the distinctive high collar and puttee leg coverings of the World War One era. Neither man is identified. Perhaps these two young men were brothers, and this case was owned by their family. More likely, this was a sample case, carried by a traveling photograph salesman who was targeting the African-American market. 277 c   (MILITARY—WORLDWAR ONE.) U.S.A.—For Democracy.
