Lincoln University, PA, [May] 1929 [600/900] The author Langston Hughes was a member of the Lincoln University class of 1929.He is mentioned in this quasi-yearbook in several places.A“Who’sWho of ‘29” lists “Lank Hughes” as the most popular member of the class, and also second in the less prestigious “Most Henpecked” category; he also is listed on honor roll on page 14. His photograph and full profile appear on page 6:“February of our Freshman year a poet came into our midst. . . . Lank came to us with many stories of the South Sea Islands, northern borders of Africa and oh ever so much, and finally became settled and acclimated to the campus, and was a pal to every one. Really and truly, it is a compliment to be paid our boy poet. . . . Lank’s Senior year found him quite busy taking orders for Senior caps.As for the future, he expects to travel and let education take care of itself.” Several other prominent students were also at Lincoln University in 1929. Future supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall ‘30 is mentioned in the class prophecy on page 8, where he is predicted to have a future as “a lawyer who came to study the technique of law in France, Germany and Switzerland” (Hughes is described here as a president, whether of the university or the United States it is not clear). Philosopher William Fontaine ‘30 is listed as associate editor, and appears on the honor roll (though not his classmate Marshall!).The debating society exploits of future NAACP activist Clarence M. Mitchell Jr.‘32 are extolled on page 16.We find no mention of Cab Calloway ‘30, not even with the orchestra.
