EMPIRE STATE BUILDING In 1930, a year after the stock market crash and onset of the Great Depression, Hine was hired to photograph the con struction of the Empire State Building. At the mature age of 56, Hine balanced on high beams 60 stories above city streets, capturing the exuberance and excitement of this magnificent skyscraper. His acclaimed photographs de picted the heroism of construction workers, who completed the project in a single year. Subsequently he published a book, Men at Work , which is highly sought after today.
