The Attica Prison Uprising, also called the Attica Riot, was a protest undertaken by prisoners at Attica State Correctional Facility in Attica, New York, based upon prisoners’ demands for better living conditions and political rights. It was one of the most well-known and significant uprisings of the Prisoners’ Rights Movement, and approximately 1,000 of the penitentiary’s 2,200 inmates rioted, took control of the prison, and took 42 staff members hostage. By the time state police regained control of the prison, ten correctional officers and thirty three inmates were dead.
