161 c BERENICE ABBOTT (1898-1991) James Joyce. Silver print, the image measuring 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.), with Abbott’s Abbott, Maine hand stamp on verso. Circa 1926; printed 1950s [9,000/12,000] A rare 1950s portrait of Joyce, who was photographed by Abbott in Paris. Abbott was Man Ray’s studio assistant from 1923-25, and subsequently opened her own portrait studio in 1926. Accompanying the photograph is a copy of a letter that reads: “Abbott took the photograph originally in the 1920s. Subsequently, she made a few new prints in the late 1950s.”
