40 41 40 c (ARKANSAS.) Joint Resolutions of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas, relative to the Death of Hon. John. A. Quitman. Letterpress broadside, 8 3 / 4 x 7 1 / 4 inches; unevenly toned, vertical fold. [Little Rock, AR, 1858?] [400/600] A possibly unique Arkansas imprint paying tribute to the late Mississippi governor and congressman John Anthony Quitman for his service in the Mexican War, his efforts to annex Cuba, and as an “exponent of the doctrine of State rights.” Signed in type by J.D. Kimbell, Secretary of the Senate, and S.M. Scott, Clerk of the House. No other copies traced in OCLC, auction records, Allen’s Arkansas Imprints, or elsewhere. 41 c (AUTOMOTIVE.) The Vanderbilt Cup Race Winthrop Moving Picture Post Card. Pair of photographic flip books, one captioned “Lancia Fiat Car, Turning Krug’s Corner” and the other “Le Blon, Thomas Car, Taking the Hairpin Curve.” Each 32 pages plus postcard in rear. Oblong 16mo, 4 1 / 4 x 2 3 / 4 inches; Lancia stamped, addressed and mailed, bound with fresh staple; Le Blon missing 3 / 4 -inch of postcard, otherwise minor wear to each. New York: Winthrop Press, 1906 [300/400] The pages of these small volumes can be flipped to create a primitive motion picture; both of these show cars racing toward the viewer during the annual Vanderbilt Cup race held on Long Island. The books convey the real danger of the race, held on a winding course through residential streets; a spectator was killed that year. None seen at auction, and only one (caption not specified) on OCLC. 39 c (ARKANSAS.) Pike, Albert; reporter. [4], 655; vi, 639 pages. 2 volumes. 4to, matched contemporary calf (the first volume an inch taller), moderate wear; foxing, moderate dampstaining; early owners’ signatures and marks on front endpapers, titles, and front boards.
