Letterpress handbill, 6 1 / 4 x 7 1 / 4 inches; laid down on board, mat toning, small inked number in lower margin. [London, 1776] [500/750] Distributed in opposition to British politician John Wilkes, then campaigning to be elected chamberlain of London. “Brother liverymen: Will ye Poll for the Man who employs French Servants—Drinks French Wines—and dared to affront your Wives by bringing his French Whore to the Ball at Guild- hall. . . . Is such a Man fit for Chamberlain?’ It is signed in type “Truth.” This is not exactly Americana, but Wilkes was Great Britain’s most prominent supporter of the American cause. None traced at auction, and only one in ESTC, at the Clements Library. Found in a mid-20th century frame from Argosy Books. 22 c (AMERICAN REVOLUTION— 1775.)
