Letterpress handbill, 6 1 / 4 x 7 1 / 4 inches; laid down on board, mat toning, small inked number in lower margin. [London, 1776] [500/750] Distributed in opposition to British politician John Wilkes, then campaigning to be elected chamberlain of London. “Brother liverymen: Will ye Poll for the Man who employs French Servants—Drinks French Wines—and dared to affront your Wives by bringing his French Whore to the Ball at Guild- hall. . . . Is such a Man fit for Chamberlain?’ It is signed in type “Truth.” This is not exactly Americana, but Wilkes was Great Britain’s most prominent supporter of the American cause.
