Photograph, 10 x 8 inches, signed and inscribed “To Albert Flower, Charlotte Fairchild, 1918”; minimal foxing and wear; with detached partial printed label from “Charlotte Fairchild’s Studio, 5 East 47th Street, NewYork.” NewYork, [1918] [300/400] This photograph was reproduced in numerous newspapers and magazines across the country as part of the national effort to promote Liberty Bonds. It was part of a series of patriotic images which established Charlotte Elizabeth (Houston) Fairchild (1876-1927) as a prominent photographer. Seen here posing as the Statue of Liberty was Miss Frances Fairchild (1899-1943), a recent debutante and not coinci- dentally the photographer’s daughter. 295
