20 c JAMES A. M.WHISTLER Free TradeWharf . Etching and drypoint on antique cream laid paper, 1877. 99x186 mm; 3x7 3 / 8 inches, full margins. MacDonald’s eighth state (of 8), with the drypoint lines extending the reflections under the sailing boat at left. Signed and inscribed “4 (ot. 29)” in pencil, lower margin. MacDonald notes similar notations on other impressions of this state, likely Whistler’s effort at editioning impressions. A superb, dark and evenly-printed, early impression with warm plate tone.
