a “pale, grayish sepia ink,” according to
Harris. A superb impression of this scarce,
early etching with strong contrasts.
After a painting by Velázquez. According to
Harris, the first edition of this print, pulled at
the Calcografía,Madrid, in 1778-79, appears
“to have been small.” Delteil 7; Harris 6.

very good, evenly-printed impression with
strong contrasts.
According to Harris, the fourth edition
“appears to have been extremely small.”
Felipe III (1578-1621) ruled Spain at the
height of its empire. He married his cousin,
Margarita de Austria (see preceeding lot), in
1599. Goya based this portrait, as well as that
of Margarita, on paintings byVelázquez now
in the Prado, Madrid. Delteil 6; Harris 5.
