The Raphael fresco decorations in the Vatican’s three-storied balconies known as the

‘Logge’ quickly became famous, and various suites of plates were issued from the 17th

century onward. However, this set was the first to attempt to show all the decoration of

the pilasters and pillars.A set of the present engravings stimulated Catherine the Great to

have a replica of the Logge built at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
