First designed in 1517 for the Farnese family, this important Renaissance palace was greatly
expanded following the sack of Rome in 1527 and Cardinal Alessandro Farnese’s ascension
to become Pope Paul III in 1534. Its building history involved some of the most
prominent architects of the 16th century, including Antonio da Sangallo the Younger,
Michelangelo (who significantly redesigned Sangallo’s façade) and Giacomo della Porta.
Today the palace houses the French embassy. Hind 107.
