According to Spink, et al, 160 impressions of this print remained in Clot’s estate (p. 487).
Whistler’s mother-in-law, Frances Birnie Philip, and one of his sisters-in-law, probably
Ethel Whibley, in the drawing room at Whistler’s house on the rue de Bac in Paris.
This is one of two lithographs published by Ambroise Vollard and printed by Auguste
Clot.Vollard famously went on to publish the prints of Picasso, among others, during the
1930s/1940s, many of which were also printed by Clot.Whistler probably drew these
lithographs of his in-laws in the fall of 1897, around a year after his wife’s death. Levy 77;
