Henry Speller (1900-1997), was born in the Central Mississippi Delta region. He dropped
out of school at twelve and began working on the local farms. He taught himself to draw, but
was also a talented guitar player and noted blues man playing with such notables as Howlin’
Wolf and Muddy Waters. His drawing are drawn from his surroundings and are generally
formed from pencil sketches that he would fill in with colored crayon. Speller is hung in the
Outsider collections at the High Museum of Atlanta and the Smithsonian.

.
Vp, circa 1950’s
[3,000/4,000]
Most of the work in these sketchbooks reflects Warren’s time in the Army in the 1950’s, with
drawings of fellow soldiers, officers etc, with some very humorous caricaturing. The artist is well
represented in several institutions, including Yale’s Beineke Library. One of the sketchbooks is
titled “Fine Arts BEA,” another “Sketches from Life ‘55.” The third, rather shaken has no title.
