A very unusual slide depicting a black Lady Liberty, holding a book under one arm and a torch
in the other. The first we have seen of this racist piece. The caption beneath the statue reads
“To be stuck up on Bedbugs Island, Jarsy Flats opposite de United States.”

[iron wood].
The slave is depicted with
his hands and feet in shackles; the chains
to his hands, bound behind his back, are
connected to his head and a bar of some
sort placed in his mouth; the left side of
the bar seems to have been broken at an
earlier time.
Np, first half of the 20th century

An unusually detailed piece, carved from one of
the hardest woods known, with exceptional
detail to each link of the chains binding the slave.
