(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.)
TAPPAN, LEWIS.
Autograph Letter
Signed to Charles Sumner, regarding
a vote in the Senate.
The ink copy
from a 19th century copy-book, small 4to,
a few tears and marginal wear.
New York, 4 February, 1862
[700/1,000]
Tappan writes: “I have just read the speech on
The Expulsion of a Senator that you had the
kindness to send to me. How any Senator after
such a presentation of facts and arguments can
hesitate to vote aye, on the question of the pas-
sage of the resolution before the Senate, I am
utterly unable to imagine. Off with his head!
So much for B. Yours Truly, L. Tappan.” The
letter refers to the expulsion of Senator Jesse
Bright of Indiana for “disloyalty” stemming
from a letter he wrote to Jefferson Davis during
the war.
