When President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the 1901 Pan-
American Exposition, there was immediate pandemonium. However, it was James “Big Jim”
Parker, a 250 pound Negro waiter from Savannah who spotted the shooter, pushed his way
through the crowd and, knocked him to the ground.
