after hand-coloring. All are in excellent condition.

A RARE GROUPING
of four complex engraved covers by the noted firm of Berlin & Jones.
Covers by this stationer are uncommon enough, but here we have four before and after hand
coloring. The particular colors used by Berlin & Jones are different than the usual garish color-
ing one finds on covers that do employ color. The greens and blues are especially striking. The
messages, or mottos on the covers are also unusual in their complexity, and resemble more the
kind of political artwork one sees from English cartoonists and caricaturists like George
Cruikshank. Berlin and Jones, established in 1847, are still in business.” Provenance: private
