snakes, Fort Sumpter in the background;. Jackson on one side and Calhoun on
the other.

The reverse of this cover bears the following: “The destruction of the Snake of South Carolina,
Nullification and Secession, and her progeny by the NATIONAL BIRD. To portray the ulti-
mate overthrow of the evil power which strikes at the life of the National Government, is the
subject of this cut.” Provenance: private collection, acquired from the Gordon Bleuler Collection
of Postal Covers.
