(MILITARY—CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC COVERS.) UNION
Dixie!
hand-
colored cover depicting the South as a naked woman being devoured by an enormous
snake. Fine and un-cancelled.
Np, circa 1861-1865
[800/1,200]
This dramatic cover, the tone unusually sympathetic to the South, shows her as a victim, rather
than a perpetrator. Quite rare to begin with, it is the only recorded example with hand-coloring.
Provenance: private collection, acquired from the Gordon Bleuler Collection of Postal Covers.
