A striking image of sergeant Butler, wearing trousers with a non-commissioned officer’s stripe
down the side; he holds his slouch hat on his lap, with the rarely seen 25th Army Corps (sec-
ond division) square badge.

James Anderson served in the 45th United States Colored Troops from Pennsylvania. The tin-
type and letter came from the home of Susan Carter of Ohio after her passing. Ms. Carter was
born around 1884 in Meigs County, Ohio before moving to Athens, Ohio to become a domes-
tic worker in the home of Frederick Bush; owner, publisher and editor of the Athens Messenger,
a daily newspaper from Athens, Ohio. She managed to save enough money to purchase a lot
and build a home in Athens, a remarkable feat for the time, being a single black woman with a
third grade education.

Aspinwall was a New York attorney who enlisted in May of 1862 and was commissioned into
field and staff of the 22nd Infantry in June. He was mustered out in July of 1863.
