“Lights and Shadows of Southern Life,
originally photographed by J.M. Schleier, Nashville Tenn., and copied for the Northern Ohio
Sanitary Fair (Cleveland, 1864).” The “Light and Shadow” presumably a reference to the
light and dark skinned children at Aunt Martha’s side. This photo was sold at the Northern
Ohio Sanitary Fair as a fund raiser for wounded Union soldiers. In all, the Fair raised
$78,000.

(MILITARY—CIVIL WAR.) PHOTOGRAPHY.
Quarter plate tintype with
color enhancement of a master sergeant in full uniform, standing with his saber
held up in front of him.
In half of a later case; faint oval “halo” from a previous case or
frame; some dents and fading. (WGC)
Np, circa 1861-1865
[600/800]
Despite its flaws, a wonderful image of this sergeant wearing a nine-button frock coat, and for-
age kepi, with cross belt to hold a sword scabbard. He holds a non commissioned officer’s sword,
and a red NCO sash with gold tinted NCO buckle.
