Anna Melissa Graves (1875-1964), was a writer, teacher, world traveler, and internationalist.
From the 1920s to the 1940s Graves traveled through Africa, Central and South America,
China, Europe and the Middle East. She taught school in many of these places and main-
tained a voluminous correspondence with the teachers, acquaintances and former students she
met on her travels. Some of her correspondence offered here includes: one 4 page ALS from
Ralph Bunche; two 1 page TLS from Leslie Pincknew Hill plus several letters from Jane Hill;
one ALS, and one TLS from Alain Locke; 6 ALS from William Leo Hansberry. Most deal
with issues of education.

A magnificent album of American scenery, with a group of 37 photographs taken in the early
days of Hampton Institute in Virginia, founded in 1868 by General Samuel Armstrong. This
group includes some rare images of African American students and faculty. There are some very
interesting images in the remainder of the album, including one of a group of Civil War soldiers
around a tent.
