This group of prominent Philadelphia African
American ministers call for a “two-day conference” in June of 1910 to protest the discrimina-
tion against American Negroes and discuss strategies to improve their condition. The organizers
were all pastors and civil rights activists from Philadelphia’s churches. Tindley was a composer
of gospel music, and author of “I’ll Overcome Some Day,” which became “We Shall
Overcome” and “Stand by Me,” re-written and recorded by Ben E. King and the Drifters.
