Previously, strikers,
including King who had come to Memphis to add his support, wore placards that read “I AM
A MAN, and UNION JUSTICE NOW. All are very scarce today, most having been swept
up after the strike and destroyed. The present example came from a local Memphis sanitation
worker’s family.
