No one could have written this sermon better than Abernathy who had been together with
King from the start of the struggle. “Eternal God, our heavenly father . . . We thank thee not
only for the hills and the mountains, for the night and for the day, but we come this morning to
especially thank thee for Martin Luther King Jr. We want to thank you that we were privileged
for a brief period to walk in his shadow. We want to thank you that his light, the radiant light
of his brilliant personality, shone upon us… “
